CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY RHIZOLYSIMETER
Engaged as the Principal Consultant for Charles Sturt University (CSU) WrightBarrat designed, documented and delivered a new state-of-the-art underground research facility in conjunction with our services consultants.
The new CSU Rhizolysimeter is the largest root-growth research facility in the world. The facility contains soil monoliths encased in steel tubes arranged in rows in two underground rhizolysimeter laboratories that allow access to the side of the soil cores beneath the soil surface. The design of the facility allows for nondestructive, in situ, and high temporal resolution measurements of integrative root growth and soil water dynamics.
The facility was constructed using reinforced concrete slabs and walls. Our design also included supporting infrastructure such as gantry cranes, rainout shelters, research buildings and associated civil works being roads, car park, drainage and services.
